Project Overview

The Doha Development Preservation project centers on Barwa Commercial Avenue, an 8 km commercial and residential development featuring modern homes, offices, restaurants, showrooms, and retail facilities. The development covers an area of 894,000 m² (1,066,900 yd²) with a built-up area of 462,000 m² (552,550 yd²).
A key objective was to ensure long-term durability and structural resilience in a region known for harsh environmental conditions.

Problem

The main challenge in this project was ensuring structural durability in an environment characterized by highly saline soil and shallow groundwater.
In the Gulf region, Sabhka soil presents significant corrosion risks due to mineral deposits with salinity levels up to three times higher than seawater. This aggressive exposure demanded a concrete design capable of resisting accelerated corrosion and ensuring long-term service life.

Application

To address these harsh conditions, a high-performance concrete mix incorporating MCI® 2005 corrosion inhibitor was used.
The goal was to protect steel reinforcement from corrosion, particularly in areas where structures are exposed directly to saline groundwater and corrosive soil conditions.

Conclusion

Cortec’s patented MCI® technology was applied to help protect reinforcing metal in the concrete from corrosion, thereby extending the overall service life of the structure.
Being bio-based, the solution offers an environmentally friendly and safe option.
MCI® 2005 is also NSF Standard 61 certified for use with potable water, supporting safe, long-term infrastructure performance.
