Project Overview

The Elliot Bridge Construction project involved building a new bridge structure designed to meet Hamilton County’s requirements for long-term durability. The county specifies that new bridge construction must achieve a 100-year service life, making corrosion protection a critical component of the design process.

Problem

The customer required a new construction solution that would prevent future corrosion issues and contribute to extending the service life of the bridge. The challenge was to incorporate a corrosion inhibitor that would meet performance standards without negatively affecting the concrete mix properties.

Application

Hamilton County mandates a 100-year service life for bridge structures. To support this requirement, MCI®-2005 NS was introduced into the concrete design along with an epoxy-coated steel system. The admixture was used during the design-build process to ensure that necessary durability and corrosion resistance measures were met.

Conclusion

MCI®-2005 NS did not affect the concrete mix design properties. Ready mix suppliers reported satisfaction with its ease of use, low dosage rate, and absence of negative effects on concrete characteristics. These factors contributed to meeting the project’s long-term durability objectives.
